Materials and Sourcing

1. Art Fixings

Passe-partout board, tape, backing sheets, and other fixing materials are new and archival quality. This is important to allow the artwork to age well without undue discolouration. For this, we use products from our professional framing wholesaler, Star-Frame.

2. Glazing

Our standard glass is upcycled from local second hand stores, particularly Kringloop De Arm. Glass is cleaned and cut to size for new frames. We do not use glass with defects (scratches, cracks, chips, etc).

Alongside offering an affordable alternative to new products and reducing waste, De Arm work with Circulaire Werkplaats Utrecht an organization that "create new products from used and discarded furniture, wood, and other materials, such as cabinets, tables, chairs, clocks, and more."

On request we can install new glass, 'museum grade' glass, and UV-protective glass at cost from our professional framing wholesaler, Star-Frame.

3. Frame Wood

We use wood from Tafelboom, a foundation in Utrecht that "focuses on the artisanal, sustainable and local processing of the wood from felled Utrecht city trees."

Tafelboom maintain a map that shows the exact location harvested trees grew and includes information on why they were harvested. This often allows us to provide customers with a clear path showing how each piece of wood became an art frame.

City trees are felled for a variety of reasons, including age, illness, or to make space for building developments.

4. Hanging Hardware

When possible we upcycle hanging hardware from second-hand frames, particularly from Kringloop De Arm. Hardware is thoroughly checked to ensure strength.

As this is not always possible we also use new products from our professional framing wholesaler, Star-Frame. Who can also help in situations when customers have a preferred hanging system (e.g. Cliprails).

5. Backing Boards

Backing boards are recalimed from second-hand stores. Boards that are suitable are cleaned, cut to size, and installed in new frames.

Frames are protected from the rear with the addition of a tape seal and plastic protectors are installed where the frame will contact the wall.

Sourcing materials locally helps us reduce the cost of unique art framing - both for our clients, and environmentally.
