A client requested a frame for a print of a botanical drawing of a potato plant. The poster was bought on holiday in Sweden, and the writing was a nice reminder of that trip, so the request was to include that within the frame of the image. The client asked for a plain frame with subtle details and we settled on oak as a nice tone to complement the yellows in the image.

To elevate the frame while staying on brief, I resawed the oak and creating bookmatched stock that mirrors the oak grain along the length of the stiles and rails. The only other detail was mitred corners with small splines, also of oak. The oak is great to work with and beautifully smooth finish with microcrystalline wax.

Oak is generally easy to work with, although it can warp over time and with seasonal humidity. I plan to check in on this frame in future, because I suspect that bookmatching the lengths will have stabilized the wood from warping, although time will tell and it was primarily an aesthetic decision. The frame was finished with a broad passe-partout topped with a lucky find, a large sheet of upcycled glass.

This was a fun project, large frames can feel quite grand as objects and there is a satisfaction to having put something grand together.
